Motion Image Bank

MOTION IMAGE BANK

This is a very good motion image which shows a freeze frame. I really like this photo as the shutter speed it has been taken at has allowed the water to be captured mid air without any blur. This makes the photo very enticing and original.

This photo inspires me in my own work as is is something that I could have access to. It is a simple concept but given a very interesting twist. The car lights all follow the same pattern so show up as one long chain of light around quite a windy road.

I really like this image as again it is something that I could do. The idea of one part of the photo being in focus, the girl, and another being blurred, the umbrella, shows good knowledge of the camera settings. I also like how when the umbrella is blurred all of the colours mix in together and create a vibrant and beautiful pattern.

This is another freeze frame image that doesn't show motion blur but instead shows the girls hair in great detail. I really like this photo as its original and is a is a skillful image on the photographers part.

MOTION STRAIGHT IMAGES

I like the result of this image for motion as it shows the way the water moves and the blur it creates with only a short shutter speed. This shows the speed of the water as it moves in a such a short time to create the blur seen. I think this photo really shows the effectiveness of  motion and the different ways it can show up on camera.

This image turned out very over exposed when taken but I like the effect that has made on the image as it gives it a surreal feel. I think that the motion in this photo is different to what you might expect as it isn't very evident however upon closer inspection you can see that the edges aren't sharp.

When taking this photo I didn't have any intention of it being motion however the horse started to walk as it was taken. This made its legs appear slightly blurred and made for a really good image. The blur indicates life within the image and the characteristic of the horse.

I like this image for motion as I like how the water droplets appear as lines when they are falling. This shows the fast motion of the water compared to the still background, which emphasises the motion which is being portrayed. I also like the appearance of the splash at the bottom of the fountain as it shows a different type of motion, a little bit slower.

This is one of my worse photos for motion but I thought I would include it as I found it difficult to capture the subject. As you can see from this image, there wasn't much motion caught on camera however the plants were moving, this makes me think that the shutter speed on the camera was too fast at the time.

Motion Work Diary

MOTION WORK DIARY

IMAGE 1

EVALUATION - I like this image because of the exposure of it, the image appears very surreal due to the blur an brightness of it. To take the image I spun the roundabout and used a shutter speed of 2 seconds, this ensured that I captured  decent amount of movement given by the roundabout. To me this image represents time passing by quickly that we often miss, the spinning option could also represent the loss of control that we have over our time.

EDITING - When editing this photo I wanted to completely change the feel of it to make it appear slightly sinister and darker than before. To do this I used the black and white tool which allowed me to adjust the colours in the image individually, for example I made the red the darkest, this made the red under toned roundabout very dark. By doing this it extenuated the movement in the photo by making the over powering white disappear.

DEVELOPMENT - If I was to take this photo again I would try to figure out why every time I went to take the picture the F stop would go to 8 despite me changing it as this allowed to much light into my photo.

IMAGE 2

EVALUATION - This image displays the rapid movement of water and how it appears when captured within a quick shutter speed. For this image I used a regular shutter speed of around 1/125 of a second, this allowed me to capture the water for only a moment and made it appear almost still. I like how this shows the natural flow of the fountain but still displays a slight blur the same as how we would see it in real life.

EDITING - To edit this image my goal was to focus on defining the water  little bit more, as in the first image it appeared quite white. To do this I used the courses tool, this allowed me to darken the shadows of the water droplets making ash individual drop slightly more evident to the eye.

DEVELOPMENT - If I was to take this image again I would take it on a slightly better camera so that I could really focus on the settings. I would also try to take it on a micro lens as this would give it a closer and more detailed view.

IMAGE 3

EVALUATION - This image wasn't originally taken with the intention of it being motion, however as I was taking the photo the horse started to walk. I love how natural this image is and the life which is shown due to the blur of it. To me, it represents the characteristics of the horse and how we would expect it to act in the wild.

EDITING - On first glance of he image I thought that he colours poked quite dull therefore I used the saturation tool to turn increase the impact of the colours. I then used the curves tool to darken the shaded areas of the image, upon doing this it added a lot of detail to the image by making the fur on the horses legs more evident and even the grass appear more detailed.

DEVELOPMENT - one thing i would change about this photo is the lack of detail in the sky above the horse, to me it doesn't appear very interesting and adds a plain and dull feel to the image which is otherwise full of life.

IMAGE THAT REQUIRES DEVELOPMENT

This image didn't go as well as I wanted it to as I didn't manage to capture the movement of the plants, this is down o the shutter speed being too short. You can also see in the image a persons hand which gives the image an overall unprofessional feel.

Joiners Definition Post

JOINERS DEFINITION POST

What is a joiner?

Joiners is a photographic technique in which one picture is assembled from several overlapping photographs

This is a joiner made by David Hockney, it was made to represent time within photographs so that there is more than just a second caught on camera.

Framing Straight Images

FRAMING STRAIGHT IMAGES

I really like how this image turned out in terms of framing. It is a clear example of framing an object to make a foreground and background one of which is in focus. In this case my dog is in focus and the frisbee which is being held above him is out of focus, this creates depth in the photo.

This is one of my favourite images that I took because of the comparison between the man-made and natural imagery. The plastic blue frame of the photo compared to the natural look through the frame makes the image look as though its been pieced together through photoshop. Altogether I think this is an interesting photo that shows a clear representation of framing.

This image I find quite interesting and is based on one of my inspiration photos. It is not very clear in the photo of the frames, however after editing I brightened the image which made the different frames more apparent. I really like the perspective of the image and the fact that most of the colour comes from the sky.

Although this isn't one of the best photos I took to show framing, I still really like it as I think its unique and has a feeling of curiosity to it. The blur on the window distorts the view of the dog in the image however I think this adds to the curious feel of it. Another aspect of the photo that I really like is the sunlight that you can see over the top of the houses. It makes the very top of the image more interesting and a lot brighter which would otherwise be quite dull and dark.

I like the simplicity of this photo and how the framing of it is all natural. The analogous colours of the photo and beautiful and make the image feel very quiet and serene. To me, the photo implies an entrance to a new place whereby passing through would lead to somewhere completely different with a happier environment.

Motion Definition Post

RECORDING MOTION

Freeze frame - a single frame forming a motionless image from a film or videotape

Motion blur - the apparent streaking of rapidly moving objects in a still image

F-STOPS

SHUTTER SPEED - the nominal time for which a shutter is open at a given setting

APERTURE - a space through which light passes in a photographic instrument

ISO - measures the sensitivity of the image sensor (international standards organisation)

2.8,4.0, 5.6, 8,11,16,22, 32 are common F stops

The longer the shutter speed is the more blurry your image is going to be therefore this is ideal for taking images of motion.

Framing Work Diary

FRAMING WORK DIARY

PLANNING

IMAGE 1

EVALUATION - Out of all the photos I took of the aspect 'framing' this is by far my favourite. To take the image I held a frisbee above my dogs head and told him to sit, as he did this he looked up to the frisbee and I caught the photo above. I think this worked very well in terms of showing an obvious representation of framing and also how important the focus of foreground and background is to an image. You can see in the photo that the outline of the frisbee isn't as sharp as you would expect it to be, this is because the camera focused more on the background, in this case my dog. This made my dog appear in much more detail and as the focal point of the photo.

EDITING - When it came to editing I wanted to try something different instead of just adjusting the saturation or hue of the image. So, I decided to really focus on the yellow of the frisbee and how even though it was out of focus slightly, I can make it the attention grab of the image. To to this I used selective black and white which allowed me to change the main body of the image in black and white but keep that bright colour of the frisbee which draws attention to and makes the image more fun.

DEVELOPMENT - If I was to take this photo again I would try to bring my dog and the frisbee more into the centre of the image so that it didn't appear to be at the top of the photo. This would have given the image a more central feel.

IMAGE 2

EVALUATION - This image is slightly abstract in terms of the appearance of the frame and how out of place it looks compared to the background.  However I really like it as I think its unique and would draw people in as they try to make sense of who the two might think together. To take the image I stood behind the slide in my garden and placed the camera in the middle of the circle so that the entire photo was framed by the blue circle. I this worked well as the perspective gives you a good idea of framing but also looks at the curve of the garden. The curves in the image I think are true to their theory, in the sense that they bring a feeling of serenity and tranquility.

EDITING - When editing this image I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to change about it so I decided to try different things and see how they appeared and I really like how this resulted. The first thing I done was darken parts of the photos using curves this made the shadows on the circle darker and the bark/brown parts of the background darker. The next thing I done was increase the saturation, this helped to make the green in the photo more saturated and brought some life into the photo.

DEVELOPMENT - As I have mentioned previously, I think this is one of my best examples of framing and like the outcome of it. Therefore, there isn't anything I would do differently if I was to take the photo again.

IMAGE 3

EVALUATION - This photo is based on one of my inspiration photos which are in my Image Bank. The photo inspired me to capture a view which we see everyday, a view from a window. Unfortunately, my view isn't as spectacular as the one displayed in the other image as it is the view over my garden however the photo still has the framing aspects which is the criteria. I believe this worked well as I really managed to capture just enough of the border of the window for it to appear as a frame.

EDITING - There wasn't much that I wanted to do to this photo in terms of editing, I only wanted to focus on brightening the image as the original didn't show the wall around the window, consequently not showing framing as I wanted it to. To brighten the photo I used curves and more the top part of the line up so that the whites of the photo were much more obvious. I then slightly increased the saturation of the photo because when I used curves it washed out the colours in the sky which I wanted to bring back to the photo.

DEVELOPMENT - There are a few things I would change on this photo if I was to take it again. One of them being the object at the bottom of the photo which I didn't realise was there until i looked back at the image. Another thing I would change is how wide the windows were open, I think it would look much better if they were open a bit more so that you could see the view more.

IMAGE THAT REQUIRES IMPROVEMENT

This is my worst image as it doesn't really frame anything and is not very interesting. Although there are some frames within in the photo it isn't very eye catching, in fact its quite boring and could be very easily overlooked.

Vivian Maier Research Note

VIVIAN MAIER

Vivian Maier was a street photographer who captured some of the most interesting marvels and peculiarities of Urban America in the second half of the twentieth century. She was described by many as the 'stereotypical european liberated woman' who was private in regardless for her love of photography.

All of the images we see now from Vivian Maier were not developed around the 1950's - 1980's (when most of them were taken) instead they were developed in 2007 by John Maloof who happened to purchase a box of undeveloped film named 'Chicago 60's' at an auction. Thinking nothing of them when he couldn't find any that he could use for his book they were pushed to the back until a year on he picked them up, fell in love with them and got them developed.

Vivian Maier's work is now said to depict the truth of New York around the 1960's capturing moments that made people stop and take in the story behind that time.

One style that Vivian Maier's work is known for if her self portrait and framing photographs. These images not only capture a scene but also Vivian taking the photo adding to the depth and the personality of the photos. Some photos that she took can be quite confusing as it feels like there are a lot of fames all merged into one, for example, this image to the left. The main focus of the image being the two ladies sitting on the bench through a window at the bottom of the image. They appear very small compared to the reflection of Vivian Maier who's reflection doesn't really hold much detail but instead seems more like a silhouette due to the way the light is on the window. The background of the image also seems like a completely different frame to me as it seems much darker than Vivian does in the photo. The cars in the background paint a clear picture of the time and place of the image, New York, 1954. The ladies in the window are wearing very classic 1950's clothes which adds to the time frame of the image and paints us an even wider picture of the way American culture was at the time. The images above has a joyous and real feel to it, the emotions on the ladies faces are real, not set up for the camera. The moment has been captured exactly how it was lived out. This style was maintain throughout Vivian Maier's work which is perhaps why her work is so widely adored, she takes those everyday moments and focuses on the emotion in each one.

This is another example of Vivian's 'self-portrait' portfolio whereby she catches her reflection in each of her photos. I particularly like the way this image is set out because of the distance between her and her reflection, it almost appears as though she's caught her reflection unintentionally. I like all of the different textures in the photo as you can see them in a lot of detail which adds the the realness of the photo. For example the fur on the cat, the mirrored surface, the tiles and the marble which the cat appears to be on. It makes the image that little bit more to the person looking into it, its like you could easily be where Vivian is standing looking at the same scene. The kitten in the photo adds to the momentary style of photography that Vivian took on by proving that her photos were not set up instead they were scenes that she saw whilst walking down the streets of New York. This could be what makes her images so interesting today, because of the way that nothing was set up, she never adjusted the way things really were, instead she would take them at face value and capture the moment precisely how it was supposed to be.

This image by Vivian Maier is part of her self-portrait collection. She uses reflection to her advantage when taking photos that include herself, rather than setting a camera up and standing in the shot. In the photograph we can see that there are two little boys in what appears to be a cart, smiling and laughing with Vivan. We can assume that those are the two boys that Vivian nannied for most of her life. The happiness in the image shows the relationship she had with the children which is evident from what we have learnt previously about her. The composition of the image is very different to most as the focus is directly in the centre. The front of the photo is in focus but the background isn't, this indicated that Vivian used a shallow depth of field to achieve this effect. Most of Maier's photographs were taken in black and white until she started using a colour camera, this really gives this image in particular a great effect. The soft colours radiate a very happy and bright vibe, which reflects the emotion we can see in the image.
