LANDSCAPE WORK DIARY 

IMAGE 1 

EVALUATION - This is one of my favourite images that I took as I think I've managed to incorporate many different elements into the image. For example there is some reflection in the image on the floor which gives the image a lot of depth and really nicely reflects the soft colours of the sky. In the image I also tried to use the rule of thirds which worked quit well, as you can see the building at the side is in the foreground and is possibly the main focus of the image. It really breaks the photo up into separate segments which leads your eyes further into the photo. 

EDITING - To edit this image I really wanted to emphasise the colours of it as my goal was to portray a vibrant urban setting. To do this I firstly used curves to make the shadows of the photo a lot darker so that the outline of the building and windows looks bold, this helped give a much hasher and colder feel to the image. I then used the hue/saturation tool to brighten the colours because they are very important to this photo, this gave the photo an almost blue hue which made it appear cold. 

DEVELOPMENT - If I was to take this image again I would try to include more of the buildings in the background so that the photo wouldn't include as much blank space where the sky is.  

IMAGE 2 

EVALUATION - I really like how this image turned out with all the autumnal colours and the interesting perspective. The log in the centre of the image acts as a leading line in the image, whereby your eyes are drawn on a path through the middle of the photo. I think this worked well in terms of showing the forest landscape as all of the natural elements are shown which makes a very detailed and interesting photo.  

EDITING - When it came to editing the image I wanted to make the shadows from the trees and the trunk stand out to add more depth and a dense feeling to the image. To do this I used curves which allowed me to darker the dark areas further. I then decided to use the burn tool around the edge of the photo to make it appear as if theres was a path of light through the forest as you follow the log. This increased the forest feel to the image because it made it look dense. 

DEVELOPMENT - There is one thing that I do not like about this image and that is that the trees behind the photo you cannot see in full, instead you can just see their trunks. I feel that if you could see more of them it would add more detail and more colour to the image. 

IMAGE THAT REQUIRES DEVELOPMENT 

Although I do still like this photo I think that it is the one out of the photos I've taken that requires improvement. I think this because it lacks a lot of colour, however this is due to the fact that it has been taken during the winter when all of the leaves have fallen off. I think that if I was to go back to the spot during spring/summer the photo would be full of life and very different, this would make a more aesthetically pleasing photo.

PORTRAITURE DEFINITION POST 

Portraiture - photograph especially one depicting only the face or head and shoulders. 

This is an example of portraiture as it shows only the ladies head and shoulders not the rest of her body. I like this image because its very striking in black and white. The closeness of the image shows a lot of detail and expression on the ladies face. 

This image shows our expectations of a war hero as the expression on his face and the black and white effect gives the image a harshness that we could expect from war. His body language makes him appear strong and full of authority. The hard lighting of the image makes him appear very masculine which would be the aim in trying to portray a hero. 

This image has a very strong feminine feel to it with the over the top lipstick and eyeshadow. To me this is a way of trying to make a statement especially as the lady is transgender so it could be a way of showing who she really is.

IMAGE 1

I really like this image for landscape as it has an interesting perspective. The photo was taken on the roof of a car park whereby you can see tall buildings in the distance but also the building on the roof, making it appear as though the background is really far away. As I took this photo just before sunset the colours are very soft and beautiful and the light reflects off of the floor giving it a very tied in feel. 

 IMAGE 2 

What I like about this image is the way its centred as it really portrays the rule of thirds. The image can be easily split into three different sections which each draw in your eyes to the different elements that make up the photo. I like how this is an urban landscape that could be easily overlooked but once concentrated on you realise all the detail and simplicity of it. 

 IMAGE 3 

This isn't the typical photograph of a landscape as it concentrates more on the subject at the front of the image however you can still see the background in good detail. I like where this photo was tank from and the tree trunk which is laying in the foreground of the image is aline which leads your eyes into the wider image. 

 IMAGE 4 

This image stands out to me due to the analogous colours which make it appear very beautiful and autumnal. I particularly like the path which runs down the middle of the photo which acts as a leading line and leads your eyes right down the centre of the photo. 

 IMAGE 5 

At first glance it isn't clear as to what this photo is of however when looking for a longer amount of time it becomes more obvious. The image whilst being a landscape shows a more urban and modern perspective, its very different to how people usually view a landscape and it doesn't have all of the conventions.

This image is a landscape photo which is made up of time lapse photos, this gives the fragmented appearance of the sky. 

Ansel Adams & Landscape Photography 

Ansel Adams is regarded as one of the great landscape photographs of old American times. It is said that through his foresight and fortitude so much of America has been saved for future Americans. He wanted to capture the beauty of nature around him without altering it. Ansel was an environmentalist which impacted his work majorly as his appreciation of nature is shown through his photos. 

What is the F64 club? 

Group f/64 was a group of seven 20th-century San Francisco photographers who shared a common photographic style characterised by sharp-focused and carefully framed images seen through a particularly Western (U.S.) viewpoint.

Pictorialism 

The name given to an international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the later 19th and early 20th centuries.

Methodical 

Adjusted the depth of field, only went out at certain times of the day for different areas and used the correct equipment for each photo. 

Pre-visualisation 

Where Ansel Adams would visualise the image before he captured it to think about the techniques he would use on it.

JOINER WORK DIARY 

IMAGE 1 

EVALUATION - This joiner image is of a building which has been altered, spaced and rotated to create a surreal feel whereby the building looks unrealistic. To do this I increased the size of some of the images to make it appear disproportionate and rotated some photos so that it looked as though the building was collapsing inwards. I really like how this joiner turned out as it gives the viewer a really interesting perspective on the building and can be quite a memorable photo. The contrast between the brown and white of the building reflects really well in this image as when its all moved around the colours are both spaced out amongst different parts of the photo. 

DEVELOPMENT - If I was to take this image again I would try to focus on some smaller parts of the image so that when it was moved around there would be some parts that would show more detail than others. 

IMAGE 2 

EVALUATION - This joiner I took of Ellie in the studio with hard light and a pink background. I think this worked well as the colour background made Ellie stand out quite well, the hard light also allowed me to pick out details on Ellie that might have been missed in natural light. I decided for this joiner that I would also take some images of the side of Ellie to get a more interesting perspective. When I was putting this together I made the side views of Ellie less opaque so that the image wasn't over complicated and the sides were faint and only picked up upon further viewing. 

DEVELOPMENT - If I was to do this joiner again I would make sure that during the studio stage the background was under Ellie'e feet because in the image the background changes to the carpet which is a completely different colour. 

IMAGE 3 

EVALUATION - I like how this joiner turned out considering i wasn't overly happy with the individual images. This joiner was harder to put together than the others due to the cone shape of the christmas tree and the different shades of green that my camera picked up at different distances. However when putting the images together I liked the way that different parts were darker or lighter, it added a lot of depth to the image and made it appear as though there was photos taken at different times of day. I tried to keep the cone shape as much as I could with it whilst also trying to make it appear slightly distorted and surreal. 

DEVELOPMENT - There isn't much I would change about this joiner if I took it again however I would try to avoid getting the barrier in at the bottom. 

Joiners Straight Images

JOINERS STRAIGHT IMAGES

This is one of my joiner images taken of a building. I done it by taking pictures of different parts of the building and then rotating them and scaling them so that the picture of the building was still there however was slightly distorted. I like how this photo turned out and the surrealism of it. 

This joiner is of Ellie, I took this in the studio under hard lighting with a pink backdrop. When putting this photo together I turned down the opacity of some of the images to give it a surreal feel. I feel that this worked very well as the hands and side of Ellie are included but are much lighter than the rest of the photo. 

This joiner is off a christmas tree and I really like the outcome of it. I think it looks good with the different shades off green which are in it. I done this by changing the aperture when I was taking the photos which gave this very tonal outcome.

MOTION IMAGE BANK 

This is a very good motion image which shows a freeze frame. I really like this photo as the shutter speed it has been taken at has allowed the water to be captured mid air without any blur. This makes the photo very enticing and original. 

This photo inspires me in my own work as is is something that I could have access to. It is a simple concept but given a very interesting twist. The car lights all follow the same pattern so show up as one long chain of light around quite a windy road.  

I really like this image as again it is something that I could do. The idea of one part of the photo being in focus, the girl, and another being blurred, the umbrella, shows good knowledge of the camera settings. I also like how when the umbrella is blurred all of the colours mix in together and create a vibrant and beautiful pattern. 

This is another freeze frame image that doesn't show motion blur but instead shows the girls hair in great detail. I really like this photo as its original and is a is a skillful image on the photographers part.

Motion Straight Images

MOTION STRAIGHT IMAGES 

I like the result of this image for motion as it shows the way the water moves and the blur it creates with only a short shutter speed. This shows the speed of the water as it moves in a such a short time to create the blur seen. I think this photo really shows the effectiveness of  motion and the different ways it can show up on camera. 

This image turned out very over exposed when taken but I like the effect that has made on the image as it gives it a surreal feel. I think that the motion in this photo is different to what you might expect as it isn't very evident however upon closer inspection you can see that the edges aren't sharp. 

When taking this photo I didn't have any intention of it being motion however the horse started to walk as it was taken. This made its legs appear slightly blurred and made for a really good image. The blur indicates life within the image and the characteristic of the horse. 

I like this image for motion as I like how the water droplets appear as lines when they are falling. This shows the fast motion of the water compared to the still background, which emphasises the motion which is being portrayed. I also like the appearance of the splash at the bottom of the fountain as it shows a different type of motion, a little bit slower. 

This is one of my worse photos for motion but I thought I would include it as I found it difficult to capture the subject. As you can see from this image, there wasn't much motion caught on camera however the plants were moving, this makes me think that the shutter speed on the camera was too fast at the time.

MOTION WORK DIARY 

IMAGE 1 

EVALUATION - I like this image because of the exposure of it, the image appears very surreal due to the blur an brightness of it. To take the image I spun the roundabout and used a shutter speed of 2 seconds, this ensured that I captured  decent amount of movement given by the roundabout. To me this image represents time passing by quickly that we often miss, the spinning option could also represent the loss of control that we have over our time.  

EDITING - When editing this photo I wanted to completely change the feel of it to make it appear slightly sinister and darker than before. To do this I used the black and white tool which allowed me to adjust the colours in the image individually, for example I made the red the darkest, this made the red under toned roundabout very dark. By doing this it extenuated the movement in the photo by making the over powering white disappear.  

DEVELOPMENT - If I was to take this photo again I would try to figure out why every time I went to take the picture the F stop would go to 8 despite me changing it as this allowed to much light into my photo. 

IMAGE 2 

EVALUATION - This image displays the rapid movement of water and how it appears when captured within a quick shutter speed. For this image I used a regular shutter speed of around 1/125 of a second, this allowed me to capture the water for only a moment and made it appear almost still. I like how this shows the natural flow of the fountain but still displays a slight blur the same as how we would see it in real life. 

EDITING - To edit this image my goal was to focus on defining the water  little bit more, as in the first image it appeared quite white. To do this I used the courses tool, this allowed me to darken the shadows of the water droplets making ash individual drop slightly more evident to the eye. 

DEVELOPMENT - If I was to take this image again I would take it on a slightly better camera so that I could really focus on the settings. I would also try to take it on a micro lens as this would give it a closer and more detailed view. 

IMAGE 3 

EVALUATION - This image wasn't originally taken with the intention of it being motion, however as I was taking the photo the horse started to walk. I love how natural this image is and the life which is shown due to the blur of it. To me, it represents the characteristics of the horse and how we would expect it to act in the wild. 

EDITING - On first glance of he image I thought that he colours poked quite dull therefore I used the saturation tool to turn increase the impact of the colours. I then used the curves tool to darken the shaded areas of the image, upon doing this it added a lot of detail to the image by making the fur on the horses legs more evident and even the grass appear more detailed. 

DEVELOPMENT - one thing i would change about this photo is the lack of detail in the sky above the horse, to me it doesn't appear very interesting and adds a plain and dull feel to the image which is otherwise full of life. 

IMAGE THAT REQUIRES DEVELOPMENT 

This image didn't go as well as I wanted it to as I didn't manage to capture the movement of the plants, this is down o the shutter speed being too short. You can also see in the image a persons hand which gives the image an overall unprofessional feel.

Joiners is a photographic technique in which one picture is assembled from several overlapping photographs

This is a joiner made by David Hockney, it was made to represent time within photographs so that there is more than just a second caught on camera.
