Connecting Essay 5

CONNECTING ESSAY 5

This is a composite photo by George Logan from his 'Translocation' portfolio. The project arose from his tendency to tell tales as a child of being born on a farm in Africa and surrounded by exotic animals. Therefore he decided to interpret the animals he once told stories about into to where he grew up in Scotland. George says that he tries to incorporate a degree of warmth and humour into the photos which I definitely see but he also tries to emphasise and interpret the visual and behavioural traits of the animals as he see's them. When looking at this photo I feel a sense of childishness, almost as if a child's imagination has been brought to life. This shows the creativity of it as bringing an exotic animal into your local environment isn't exactly what we expect an adult thinking about. The image is very well composed and the elephant really looks like it belongs amongst all of the greys and the proportionate size of it. Overall this photo brings out the fun and inner child of most of the viewers and possibly might make them think of their own childhood.

This is one of my composite images. It is an image of my dog, Cody, enlarged down a road. In the image, he looks unproportionate compared to the house next to him. This is because I wanted to emphasise how an image can be completely altered through editing and creating a composite photo. I like the composition of this image as the main subject (being the dog) is in the centre and is the place that your eyes first go. I also like how the path going through the photograph acts as a leading line, this is good because it draws you further in and allows you to take in the detail of the background. When editing the separate layers of the image I tried to darken my dog so that he blended into the background a bit more. This helped tie it together more and made the editing look slightly better. I needed to do this as the image of my dog was taken inside so was a brighter light compared to the dreary weather outside, which we can see from the grey sky. Overall, I think the photo is a clever way of producing an obvious composite image.

Both of these images (George Logan's and mine) play on the theme of a childish imagination. They both include animals out of context however in different ways. In mine instead of using a wild animal in a local setting, which is inaccessible to me, I used my pet in a local setting but just much bigger. I feel like this reflects childish thoughts as when you are young you see your pets as much bigger than they are and can imagine them in these peculiar situations. In conclusion both of the images link as I based mine around Logan's however Logan's is much more realistic than mine due to the quality of editing.
