PHYSICALLY ALTERED IMAGES - WORK DIARY
Whilst doing my physically altered images I done 5 so that I could illustrate a few different ideas that I had. 3 of the photographers I altered in the style of Barbara Kruger, who put text overlays on her images with a quote usually relating to feminism.
This is my first image in the style of Barbara Kruger which reads "beauty isn't skin deep'. I particularly like this image as it conveys a good message and links well into the problems of todays society. This being that we only look at the outside of people but whilst everyone is beautiful theres still much more to them. By creating an image like this I am trying to spread the message that beauty is on the inside as well as the outside so we should take more time toy recognise this. When taking the image I told Hannah to look down, I think this worked well as she is looking at the words skin deep and appears to have a lot of emotion on her face. When actually composing the image I wanted to edit the photograph to black and white as this further reflects the style of Barbara Kruger and it makes the red writing stand out more. Then when I put the writing onto the image I wanted 'skin deep' to be close together as it is the most important part of the quote and the closer they are the more emphasis is on them. Overall I think this is a good photo that shows a message that many people should listen to and it is very striking so will catch peoples eyes if it was an advert for example.
Out of the three Barbara Kruger style images I done this one is my favourite. I like this one the most because the message and the image are both extremely striking and work well together. This photograph is of my little sister in the mirror doing her lipstick, she is only 13 therefore seems too young to be wearing this type of make-up. This links into the idea of 'never grow up' and how being older than her and looking at what she is doing you realise that she shouldn't be growing up that quick. I guess the image is partly ironic as she is clearly growing up before her age because of how modern society pushes you when you're young therefore she is following the current trend of her age group. Again I edited this photo to black and white so that it followed the style of Kruger and reflected her work. I really like the perspective of this photography as you can see the back of my sisters head and the main focus is on reflection, I tried to do this to include the element of reflection to enhance my photo.
Lastly I altered this image in the style of Barbara Kruger which reads 'too young, too pressured'. I like the closeness of this image and how it shows a lot of detail which shows the quality of the image. In this image my little sister is doing her make-up into the camera and slightly smiling. I wanted her to be smiling but only a small amount as this looks almost like a fake smile, like she is forcing herself to be happy with what she is doing. I feel like this reflects the writing that I overlaid onto the photo as its about being pressured into something that you're too young to do which may not make you feel happy. When taking the image I used soft lighting as I wanted my sister to look young and her features to be soft so that she appeared slightly vulnerable and sweet. I think this worked well as the outcome of the photograph definitely reflects the writing that is over the top.
This image I didn't alter in the style of Barbara Kruger, instead, I decided to be creative and add my own twist to the image. As in the photograph, my model had quite a sad expression in her eyes and her hand over her mouth it seemed like she was trying to silence herself or hide her emotion. To me, this could represent people's inner thoughts, how they hide their true feelings and put on a fake smile. Therefore to alter the image I glued an actual fake smile onto her hand, I did this because I wanted to emphasise how fake some emotions can be but we don't always notice even though it's obvious. When I edited this photo I decided to convert it to black and white as it had a darker effect which tied into the theme of me showing her having a sad emotion.
This is my last physically altered image and is of my sister sitting on a bed looking into the camera. I like the composition of this photo as she is the main subject and is in the very centre, this means that the image is striking and draws attention very easily. As this image is very serious looking I wanted to contradict it and lighten the mood, therefore, I put bright stars around my sister and on her head. As you can tell these have been stuck on they look rather out of place compared to the original image which looks slightly dark. However, I like how this appears as it shows how you can change the perception of a photograph by just adding some shapes.
