Tone Definition Post

TONE DEFINITION POST

What is tone?

•Tone refers to the lightness or darkness of something. This could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears.

•Tones are created by the way light falls on a 3D object. The parts of the object on which the light is strongest are called highlights and the darker areas are called shadows. There will a range of tones in between the highlights and shadows.

•Without tone Form does not exist, tone is therefore an important aspect in the visualisation of 3D objects.
  • Where light hits depends on where the highlights of the image will be and where the dark area will be.

The Zone System

This was created by Ansel Adams as a method to make sure he achieved the correct exposure.

This image shows tone very well. You can see the dark tone of her dress against the light highlights on her skin. We can also see that her skin has no detail on it where its number 10 on the tone zone system, this links into the theory. Her dress is made of different tones which is how we can see the detail of it, some parts are dark but some parts are reflecting lights. The same goes for her hair the different tones help us build the colour and detail of her hair.

Does tone like into masculinity/femininity?
In this case I do think that the darker tones refer more to a masculine or stronger approach because it makes his facial features a lot harsher. However in the image of Marilyn Monroe its very bright and well lit, this makes her look fragile and softer than he does, playing into the stereotype of worm band women.
