Image 1

Evaluation - I like this image because it portrays pattern in general life very well. It shows the cyclical nature of buildings and how the repetitive structure they follow make them look very pleasing and orderly to the eye. When taking this photo, I tried to focus on just one part of the building to show just a small part of the pattern, the symmetry of the windows. I think this worked well in terms of portraying a clean and simplistic pattern.

Editing - When editing this photo I wanted to focus on making the building look darker so that the window frames and the brick wall background stood out against the white foreground. I think this worked well as I used curves so that I could focus on making just the areas I wanted darker.

Development - If I was to take this image again I would try to come in a little bit closer so that I wouldn't have had to crop it. I would also have liked the lighting to be a bit harder, however, this couldn't be helped because on the day it was overcast.

Image 2

Evaluation - I really like this image and the way it portrays pattern. It really represents how the pattern can be shown in the modern day and how it surrounds us but we don't usually notice. The puzzle in the graffiti follows a pattern which fits together. I think this particular piece represents how things can be fixed together or how all different pieces create a much bigger story. I think how this image turned out because I like the amount of the art that I framed.

Editing - When editing this image I didn't want to change too much about it. Instead I wanted to bring the frame in so that the majority of the image was the puzzle pieces. When it came to the colour of it I like how vibrant it looked however I did turn up the saturation slightly just to really emphasise the red pieces against the black outline.

Development - If I was to take this photo again I would try to focus more on the pattern. Therefore I would maybe concentrate on two to three puzzle pieces rather than the whole line.

Image 3

Evaluation - When looking at all my images I noticed that most of them were just patterns of windows, buildings and tiles on walls. Therefore I wanted to find a pattern that we don't immediately recognise as this. I decided then to take a photo of the laces on my friends shoe, this made a good example of hidden patterns. I think this worked well because of the repeated criss-cross lines, this is interesting as its not something we would definitely say is pattern until further thinking.

Editing - I thought that when editing this image it would look good if the shoe was darker and the laces were whiter, so that the pattern jumps out of the image at first glance. To do this I used curves, this helped me to allocate only the areas I wanted to alter.

Development - I don't think there is anything I would really want to change about this image, the only things I would do if i took it again it to maybe alter the position of the bow on the laces.

Photo that requires improvement

I think this image requires improvement because its not very interesting. It wouldn't catch anyones eye as its not got any saturated or bright colours in it, it's very dull. It also doesn't show an original pattern and is nothing spectacular that would make for an interesting piece.

Evaluation - On the day when taking photos it was raining, so I thought that the rain drops would make an interesting texture. Something a little bit different to other images. The umbrella really reflects the droplets of water well making them very obvious against the material. To capture the droplets I used the flash on the camera, this reflected of the rain, making the droplets appear shiny.

Editing - As you can see the original image of the umbrella shows it as black however I thought this looked boring so to make it more interesting I moved the hue of the colours to the dark blue which happened to make the umbrella appear purple. Then I turned up the saturation to make the colour appear more saturated. Lastly, I noticed that the water droplets didn't look as obvious as I wanted them too, therefore I used curves to make the outline of them appear darker.

Development - Ideally if I took this image again I would want more rain droplets on it in order to really show texture on it. However I do really like the way it turned out for an unplanned image.

Image 2

Evaluation - I really like this image because of the contrast between the textures. The smooth texture of the cement against the bumpy and raised tiles really compliment each other. I think this picture worked very well because it shows how different textures show up on camera. It's a very simple yet effective image which really interests me.

Editing - When editing the image I thought it would be more effective in black and white. To do this first I turned the saturation right down, this made the image colourless but very faded and dull. To make the black and white have an impact I used curves so that I could concentrate on darkening the tiles and cracks between them but also whitening the cement that is on top.

Development - There isn't much about this image that I would change if I took it again. However, one thing that might make it better at portraying texture is to zoom in more so that the texture can be picked up more.

Image 3

Evaluation - This is my favourite picture I took in terms of texture. I really like how the texture of the material looks when it's folded, it looks fluffy and soft even under hard lighting. I used the flash to take this picture so that I could pick up the texture really well. I like the fact that when you look at the image it isn't obvious what it actually is, it leaves us to individual minds to decide where this is from.

Editing - The original of this picture was very saturated and bright where the flash had reflected on it. I wanted to get rid of this effect, to do this firstly I turned down the saturation this made the red very muted. I then used curves to made the detail appear darker. I think this worked very well because it makes the texture really stand out.

Development - There isn't anything I would change about this image because I really like the way it came out. The final edited versions colour and the amount of texture that is captured all complinments each other well.

Photo that requires improvement

I think this is my worst image, I think this because it doesn't really show the texture very well. What you can't see in the image is that the white paint is peeling off, this is what I tried to capture. It was very difficult to catch this on camera as the paint was on the ceiling, this means I couldn't get the right angle to take the picture.

Colour Straight Images

Colour Straight Images

This image is in my top 5 because I like how the shapes could be perceived in multiple different  ways. The material and shape of the curves made them reflect the light and colours differently which I really like. It almost reminds me of fish scales and how they reflect light through water.

This is also one of my favourite images because I like how the image focused on the end of the bench, it really emphasises the unnatural blue against the natural greens in the background.

This image is in my top 5 because I like the perspective of it. I took the image from just underneath of the lamp post so that the angle was unique. I love how the colour red look against the cloudless, blue sky and the muted grey behind it.

Out of all the images I took this is the one I like the most. I like it because of the saturated yellow of the flowers against the darker green. The yellow in this image true to its theory brings happiness and a sense or harmony to the image.

Lastly, I find this image interesting because of the contrast between muted and saturated colour. As most of the background is different shades of muted colours it really makes the red seem even more obvious. It's a really eye capturing image that is down to the imagination to decide the meaning.

I like this image because it focuses on the texture of the stones and really shows the detail of each of them. What stands out about this image in the green plant in the middle, I like how this breaks the image up and makes it more interesting.

This image inspires me for my photos because its very achievable. It is definitely the type of textured image I could look out for when taking my pictures. I really like the muted colours on this image that you don't usually see together.

I really like this image as I am particularly interested in portrait photography. I love how every detail on the old mans face shows up due to the black and white effect. It really interests me and almost makes me feel a connection to this man because its just like looking at him face to face.

I like this image because its very saturated which makes it appear bright and appeals to the eyes. I really like the way it shows texture without being dark like most textured images are.

This image really appeals to me in terms of content. It is a meaningful image which shows life and maybe a story. Its much better than other images that just show texture without any reason behind the image.

Pattern Definition Post

What is pattern?

  • Patterns are simply repeated shapes, colours or objects, ordered in either regular or irregular formations.
  • Pattern is an underlying structure that organises surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner.
  • Pattern can be described as a repeating unit of shape or form, but it can also be thought of as the "skeleton" that organizes the parts of a composition.

This image is an example of pattern as it is the same shape or form repeated several times over.

What is texture?

  • A surface with rough or raised parts which you can feel or see.
  • The main part of capturing texture is to get the lighting right.
  • Texture can be accentuated by the side light of early sunny mornings or early evenings, or by overhead light when the sun is vertical and high in the sky.
  • Hard light - small light source
  • soft light- general light source, cloudy day
This image is an example of texture. You can see the raised parts and cracks in the elephants skin, which are the textured parts.

Examples By Photographers

By Patrice De Villiers
This image by Patrice De Villiers is of still life food. The image really emphasises the texture of the food making it look fresh and appetising. I like this image because I think the concentration on the texture makes the food more realistic and the image a bit more effective.

 Sebastiao Salgado
This photographer has really concentrated on the texture of this animals scales. This is very effective because it makes the animal look very realistic. To me it represents a feeling of fear in the audience, the way the animal looks in the image is almost as real as you would encounter it face to face. Whereas if the image was less focused then it wouldn't inflict the same fear or feeling.

Images that inspire me in Colour

I find this image inspiring because of the colour element. It is a very simple image but aesthetically pleasing because of the layout of analogous colours. To me it looks like just a cropped area of the original photo which I imagine to be an array of different colours layer out in the colour wheel order.

This image is very different to the first because its muted and natural tones. I really like this image because it gives me the impression of emotions that this lady is feeling. To me it looks almost sad, as though she's longing for someone that she's lost or missing someone. The natural tones of her pale skin and light hair against the rusty orange of her coat make her features stand out even more.

This image is the true definition of complimentary colours. This image inspires me for when I'm taking my own pictures to look out for contrasting images where the colours compliment each other and stand out more than they would on their own.

This image is very interesting to me, I'm not sure weather it has been made by placing different colour bulbs in the lamp posts or by editing. However it is still intriguing as it goes in a colour wheel order.

This image has also inspired me in my images. I really like the idea of only one part of the image being in colour, it really gives the image a focal point. The fact the main part of the image is black and white gives the image a gloomy feel however the reflection in the puddle  makes it seem as though before it was bright.

Image 1

Evaluation - For this photo, I really wanted to focus on capturing the saturated red against the muted tones of the wall. I wanted to make sure that the box was central to the image so that it was the main focus of it. I think this worked well, it's a very simple image that extenuates the main colour and is very eye catching. I like the angle which I took this image from because it means I managed to capture some of the floor leading up to the wall adding the muted border of the photo.

Editing - I didn't want to edit this image too much because I liked the original look of it and thought that colour stood out enough without adjustments. However, I  increased the saturation a little bit more to really make the red saturated and look almost out of place or newly painted.

Development -  There isn't much I would change about this image because I really like the effect and simplicity of it. I like the colours that are included and how they contrast each other. If i was to take it again I would try to come in a little bit more so that there isn't as much floor included in it.

Image 2

Evaluation - This is one of my favourite images I took because I like the perspective and colours in it. When taking this photo I really tried to focus on how low I got, which affected where the flowers appeared in the background. I think this work relatively well, however, the tallest flower is slightly above the bush in the background which takes away the definition of it.

Editing - When editing this image I wanted to make the yellow in the flowers more saturated and the greens slightly more muted. To do this I firstly turned up the saturation, just enough that they stood out against the background but still looked realistic. Then I used curves to darken the dark areas of the image, this made the yellow stand out even more and gave the image a more striking effect.

Development - If I was to take this image again I would try to focus more on where the flowers are positioned on the background so that the contrast is better. I would also zoom in a little more so that the focus is more on the flowers rather than the stems and leaves.

Image 3

Evaluation - In this image I tried to capture mainly the blue end of the bench. I got at as low angle as I could to make sure the main focus of the image was the bench and as least background as I could. I have mixed feeling about this image, although I think it captures the colour aspect well as it makes the blue the focus, it doesn't really have any meaning. Although it may be eye-catching I don't think its very thought provoking or an image that would mean something to somebody.

Editing - As I mentioned before this image doesn't really have any meaning and even the blue in it doesn't jump out at you. Therefore when editing this picture I decided to make it black and white with a colour focus so that it looked different and more thoughtfully presented. To do this I used the Lasso tool to outline the bench end then inverted to make the back ground black and white. Lastly, I turned up the saturation of the blue just to add a little bit more interest into it.

Development - If I was to take this image again I would try to get an even lower angle so that the bench end was even more of a focus in the image. I would also try to include perhaps someone on the bench which would add meaning to the photograph and capture a moment.

Image that requires improvement

Out of the 24 images I took, I think this is the worst one. I think this because the images isn't very effective. The subject of the photo was supposed to be the colours but where the sun is reflecting off of them they look washed out. I also think the angle of the image is wrong and should've been taken from more of a central position rather than to the left.
